Quick Exercise

Here is a simple method for identifying your idealized vocal and presentational persona:

1. Write out how you presently believe you are perceived.
2. Write out how you would like to be perceived.

Do not make your responses in bullet point form. Write them in sentence form with good punctuation because the period at the end is a metaphor: it implies "This is how I want to be perceived ...period ...all the time". There is nothing that says, "Except when I'm nervous," or "When I'm afraid," or "When I'm lazy." The period is a metaphor that says: "This is what I am willing to commit to ...period". You will support this with two drawings: one drawing that is a reflection of the first statement, and one drawing that reflects the second statement. The drawing can be representational or abstract, simple stick figures or complex. This is a piece of the map that you need to take the Vocal Awareness journey, to discover and bring out your true persona.

Parenthetically, the Greek root of the word "persona" is phersu, which means through the sound. Therefore, one's identity is largely conveyed through one's voice.

Vocal Awareness is more than a how to for voice. It is an exciting and positive how to for living! With Vocal Awareness as your tool you will learn how to be who you are.
